How to support local businesses during quarantine

In our journey to green up our lives, we have learned that supporting local businesses plays a great role in the transition to a more sustainable economy. The benefits of such support abound; for instance, local food has higher quality because it has traveled shorter distances and is therefore fresher. In addition, carbon emissions associated with its transport are kept at the lower range. Still in the area of food production, many local farms are family businesses that can continue to succeed as family owned enterprises thanks to the support of locals who value much more than organic, homemade meals. Other than preferring high quality products, they enjoy having a closer relationship with those who grow and prepare their food. Trust is built, and the sense of belonging to a close community is established.

In light of the social changes that have been taking place, if we have to name just one thing that has been constantly emphasized, one can argue it is the fact that we are all in this together. No matter where in the world we are, we are on the same boat and need each other. So it seems like a good moment to look at the support of local businesses in greater depth, as a way to keep people’s livelihoods in place. After all, sustainability is also about sustaining communities. Luckily, from buying dairy at a local farm to hiring a local handyman to picking up food from the nearby cafe, there is a range of options available to support our local business in this special time. Here’s how:

Using apps like Social Deal

You can easily find out, from the comfort of your home, which businesses in your area remain open during quarantine by using the Internet. That will work really well for the businesses you already know, but in order to support other local businesses, you can use Social Deal. The platform’s purpose is to bring you special deals from the most popular businesses in your area. Of course not all of them are locally owned, but that is easily checked anyway. It is also true that it is not possible to redeem all deals during quarantine. But if you’re able to invest in future adventures, there are great deals in travel and entertainment that currently have extended expiration date. This way, you can plan ahead your post-Corona vacation and long weekends.

For your day-to-day needs, you can find lots of good deals (up to 60% discount) in meal pickups (remember to take your own containers to avoid waste) and deliveries, online classes such as languages and arts, photo, video and printing services, and even surprising experiences such as pub quizzes, wine tasting and escape rooms at home. That is to say Social Deal is also a place to see the famous entrepreneurs’ creativity at its best!

And rest assured: Social Deal guarantees that its members comply with all the rules about the Corona virus, as established by the Dutch Health Authorities (Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu).

Using Boeren en Buren and fresh meal boxes

On the website of Boeren en Buren you can buy products from different farmers in your area and pick up all of them at the same time. In Utrecht, for example, the pick up point is at Berlijnplein, on Tuesday evenings. The product range includes produce, dairy, bread, meat, cheese, ice cream, and even beer.

If you live in or near Amsterdam, you can order a mix of products and have it delivered to your house, from Amsterdam farmers and dairy producers, through Amstel Heroes, Support your locals, and Support local markets.

Using Farmed Today

On the website of Farmed Today you can find more than dairy and produce. While fresh produce is delivered only in Amsterdam, they ship to the entire nation a range of homemade dips and sauces, oils and vinegar, drinks, honey, nuts, seeds, grains, beans, meats and even natural supplements and super foods.

Extending instead of canceling

If you have made a reservation for a special date like Mother’s Day, extend it instead of canceling. This lets your local restaurant owner know you will be back when the crisis is over. It may be necessary to pay in advance, but if you can do it, why not?

In case a store where you have a voucher or gift card isn’t open and your deal is about to expire, get in touch and have your date extended. Got a gift such as an article of clothing or shoes that don’t fit you or your style? Call and ask to have it exchanged when the store reopens instead of asking for money back. The same way as the restaurant owner, the store manager will be happy to hear that you intend to come back.

This is how we’ll support our community now, so we can go back to enjoying everything together in the near future!
