Keep Cool Game
The game deals with the development of cities and the related climate policies. The “Keep Cool” game was created by Gerhard Petschel-Held and Klaus Eisenack who are both academics with a background in climate change adaptation. They came up with the “Keep Cool” game in order to contribute to current research and to educate society.
How you play
Each player acts as the mayor of a large metropolis. The goal is to build up the economy of your city and earn points. However, the climate is in your hands! Each player has to decide between; choosing the path of renewable energy with photovoltaics and wind energy, or chosing low cost fossil energy sources. Players have to decide whether to collaborate with other mayors to protect the climate, or to work alone and do what’s best for your own interests. Each decision has a consequence.
The game will be introduced and moderated by Rishi Bhatnagar. Rishi is a doctoral candidate specializing in climate change and sustainability transition in the Netherlands. Alongside teaching Bachelor and Master’s degree students, Rishi focuses on developing interactive games to educate participants on complex problems like climate change. Following Greta Thunberg’s example, more common civilians need to learn and step up to help transition our society towards a more sustainable and equitable future.
