The second fully English-spoken event hosted by Duurzame Week!
This time, we will be getting a tour at Kringloop (= thrift shop) De ARM Hoograven and will let our creative juices flowing!
Kringloop De ARM
De ARM was founded in 1981 under the motto: “Give items ánd individuals a second chance”. The items part is perhaps obvious: they give second-hand objects a shot at finding a new owner like all thrift shops. But it’s not just that, if products aren’t completely fit to resell, they restore them in-house. Furthermore, there’s a workshop where they create completely new products in cooperation with a designer.
The individuals part however is at least as important: De ARM offers jobs to people who may not have had an education, are re-integrating or are otherwise unable to find their place in society as easily as the rest of us. They also have spots for volunteers to help with the refurbishing of furniture, testing electronics among other tasks. Also, they are fully self-sufficient and don’t get any subsidies from the government whatsoever – of which they’re quite proud!
Event details
After the tour around the shop, we have a creative challenge for you: find items in the shop, the recycling area or bring your own and create something new out of it! By doing so, you will come to understand that it requires creativity to look at something that is seemingly ready for the bin and find a new use. There are mirrors, pieces of wood, glue, tools and whatever may be in or around the shop that night which we can use.
